FOR THE EASTERN REGION BY THE EASTERN REGION
Join us for the Eastern Region Black History Month Webinar: In Search of My People
Join us for a powerful and personal journey of discovery, identity and belonging This presentation honours our communities by sharing the personal journey of Dr Arlene P. Weekes, which began at the age of 15 with feelings of anger and many unanswered questions after watching Roots and discovering the history of slavery in Africa, a history she had never been taught.
From the age of 25, Dr Weekes travelled extensively across Africa, including visits to Kenya, Egypt, Ghana and The Gambia, seeking a deeper connection to her ancestral roots beyond Guyana and Barbados, the two Caribbean nations to which her maternal ancestors were taken during the transatlantic slave trade.
In 2020, a DNA test conducted by African Ancestry identified her maternal lineage as Bamileke from Cameroon. In 2025, to mark her 60th birthday, she travelled to Cameroon, continuing a profound journey of discovery, connection and belonging.
Through personal stories, reflections and lived experiences, Dr Weekes explores the significance of heritage, identity and the transformative power of reconnecting with ancestral roots.

Eastern Region Training Session: Unconscious Bias, Intersectionality, and Social Identity Theory – understanding their impact on residential child care
11th NOVEMBER 2026, 12:15PM – 1:30PM
FOR THE EASTERN REGION BY THE EASTERN REGION
Join us for the webinar: Unconscious Bias, Intersectionality, and Social Identity Theory – understanding their impact on residential child care
This session will present the change thinking in an intersectional way can take our care planning deeper and wider, and be more detailed to a purpose.
Recognising intersectionality supports this task through bringing an understanding that people’s experiences are shaped by a blend of factors, including (but not limited to) age, background, gender, financial status, and where they grew up. It helps us to appreciate each individual’s complexities and makes people feel seen and valued for who they truly are.
Starting from considering the following questions regarding social identity theory
•How can we protect and assist a child in building resilience from challenges that we are unaware of?
•How can we build an authentic relationship when we only know the parts of the child we are able to see?
•How can we ensure we are positive about their identity if we are unaware of our own unconscious bias?
•How can we help a child to be personally and socially responsible if we are not personally and socially responsible?
We will end looking at a proposal for Intersectional Care Planning that has central to it strengths and individualised care, the quality of attentive attuned relationships, an appreciation of belonging and stability as outcomes of emotional, social and psychological wellbeing, upholding rights the effectiveness of planning for children’s moves into the home
